Disney’s Blizzard Beach vs. Typhoon Lagoon: Which Disney Water Park Is Right for Your Family?

When people think about a Walt Disney World vacation, the four theme parks usually get all the attention. But if you’re visiting during Florida’s warmer months, don’t overlook Disney’s two incredible water parks!

A water park day can be the perfect way to slow down, cool off, and enjoy something a little different during your vacation.

The biggest question I get is:

“Which one should we choose?”

The good news is that there’s really no wrong answer. Both Disney water parks are beautifully themed, incredibly clean, and offer something for everyone. The best choice simply depends on your family’s travel style.

Let’s dive in!

Meet Disney’s Two Water Parks

Disney’s Blizzard Beach

Imagine a ski resort… in Florida.

According to Disney’s story, a freak snowstorm melted away before the ski resort ever opened, leaving behind melting slopes that became one of the most unique water parks you’ll ever visit.

It’s quirky, creative, and full of snowy details that somehow make perfect sense in the Florida sunshine.

Blizzard Beach is home to some of Disney’s biggest thrills, including Summit Plummet, one of the tallest free-fall body slides in the world.

If your family loves exciting slides and a little extra adrenaline, Blizzard Beach may be your perfect match.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon

Now imagine the opposite.

A tropical paradise was hit by an enormous typhoon, tossing fishing boats onto rooftops and leaving behind waterfalls, caves, and lush island scenery.

Typhoon Lagoon feels like stepping onto a tropical island vacation.

It’s home to one of the largest wave pools in North America, where you’ll find waves big enough to make you feel like you’re actually at the beach.

If your family enjoys relaxing tropical vibes mixed with plenty of attractions, Typhoon Lagoon is an excellent choice.

Which Park Has Better Thrill Rides?

If your family is chasing excitement, Blizzard Beach has the edge.

Some favorites include:

  • Summit Plummet
  • Teamboat Springs
  • Toboggan Racers
  • Slush Gusher
  • Downhill Double Dipper

Typhoon Lagoon still offers exciting attractions, including Crush ‘n’ Gusher, but overall it leans slightly more toward a balanced mix of thrills and relaxation.

Winner: Blizzard Beach

Which Water Park Is Better for Younger Kids?

Honestly…

Both parks do an outstanding job for younger children.

Blizzard Beach features Tike’s Peak, a pint-sized water playground designed specifically for little ones.

Typhoon Lagoon offers Ketchakiddee Creek, another fantastic area with gentle slides, fountains, and splash zones.

If your family includes toddlers or preschoolers, you’ll find plenty to keep them entertained at either park.

Winner: It’s a tie.

Which Park Is Better for Relaxing?

If your ideal vacation includes floating down a lazy river and soaking up the atmosphere, Typhoon Lagoon gets my vote.

The tropical landscaping, sandy beaches, and island vibe make it feel more like a Caribbean getaway than a traditional water park.

Blizzard Beach has a lazy river too, but the overall atmosphere feels a little more energetic.

Winner: Typhoon Lagoon

Wave Pools

This one isn’t even close.

Typhoon Lagoon’s Surf Pool is legendary.

The waves are much larger than what you’ll find at most water parks, making it a favorite for older kids, teens, and adults.

If your family loves spending hours playing in the waves, this could easily become the highlight of your day.

Winner: Typhoon Lagoon

Lazy Rivers

Good news…

Both parks have excellent lazy rivers.

They’re beautifully landscaped, relaxing, and a wonderful break between attractions.

This category is really too close to call.

Dining

Both parks offer quick-service dining with burgers, chicken, salads, pizza, snacks, and those must-have Mickey-shaped treats.

You’ll also find refillable drink stations and plenty of shaded seating throughout each park.

Unless you’re looking for a very specific menu item, I wouldn’t choose one park over the other based solely on food.

Are Disney Water Parks Worth It?

In my opinion… absolutely.

Many families try to pack every vacation day with nonstop theme parks.

But sometimes the best memories come from slowing down.

A water park day gives everyone a chance to relax, cool off, and enjoy a different side of Disney.

It’s especially nice if you’re visiting during the hotter months when afternoon temperatures can climb into the 90s.

My Recommendation

Here’s how I’d generally guide my clients:

💙 Choose Blizzard Beach if your family…

  • Loves thrill rides
  • Has adventurous older kids or teens
  • Wants the biggest slides Disney offers
  • Enjoys unique Disney storytelling

💚 Choose Typhoon Lagoon if your family…

  • Wants a more relaxing vacation day
  • Loves wave pools
  • Enjoys tropical beach vibes
  • Wants a balanced mix of excitement and downtime

The truth is, you really can’t go wrong.

Disney has done an incredible job making each park feel completely different while maintaining the same high level of theming and service you’d expect throughout Walt Disney World.

Planning Tip from Hope

One thing I always tell my clients is that there isn’t one “right” way to do Disney.

Every family has different priorities, budgets, ages, and vacation styles. That’s why I take the time to get to know what’s most important to your family before recommending resorts, tickets, dining, or even which water park to visit.

Whether you’re planning your first Disney vacation or your tenth, I’d love to help you create a trip that’s tailored specifically to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a separate ticket for Disney’s water parks?

Yes. Disney’s water parks require admission that’s separate from a standard theme park ticket, although some vacation packages and ticket options may include water park access.

Can I visit both water parks on the same trip?

Absolutely! If both parks are operating during your vacation, many families enjoy experiencing each one.

Are Disney water parks open year-round?

Not exactly. Disney typically operates one water park at a time while the other undergoes seasonal refurbishment, though operating schedules can change. Be sure to check Disney’s calendar before your trip.

What should I bring?

Pack swimsuits, towels (or rent them), sunscreen, water shoes if your family prefers them, a waterproof phone pouch, and a change of clothes for after your visit.
